Not all dog breeds are friendly with family and children. It is a normally understood that small dogs gel well with a family. That is partly true. Small dogs are good family dogs. However there are larger breeds such as the Labrador, golden retriever and the collie that are good family dogs and are very friendly towards kids.

Most small dogs are not much trouble and are usually very congenial. They are very gentle and behave in a calm manner. They are wary of unnecessary aggression although their agility is no less than any aggressive dog of a bigger breed. However, a lot depends upon how a dog is raised and trained. Dogs are friendly if they are handled well and not in a rough or abusive manner.

The Welsh Corgi is one such breed that is not only intelligent and obedient, but also very considerate towards children and family members. These are lovable as puppies and just as adorable as adult dogs. The two varieties in the breed, the Pembrokeshire and Cardigan are equally popular. A poodle is also a popular choice when it comes to a family dog.

The Maltese is a toy dog that is a very popular pet. Maltese won't disturb you too much; they only need a little evening walk. Maltese is a very cute playful breed that entertains family members with its frolicking manner. Terriers of most types are a good choice for a family pet.

The King Charles Spaniel breed is very popular as family dog and perhaps it is the best family dog. It is one among the most sought after family pet dogs. It easily becomes friendly with all family members. However, dog feeding could be an issue of concern with these dogs.
 
Other choices of family dogs are the breeds, Lowchen and Staffordshire bull terrier. Both these dogs gel well with families. All dogs should be looked after well. Dogs need care and attention, proper feeding and good grooming. Dogs should be toilet trained from a very young age so that they do not go around messing up the house.
