If your child has grown up with a pet dog, then chances are that he will consider all pet dogs to be equally safe. But, just because a dog has been petted does not mean that it can't harm your child. It is for this reason that you must teach your child the following things if he likes mingling with other people's pets.

Do not run to a dog.
You may run to a dog to grab him or to give him a warm hug. But the dog may take this as a threat or a warning signal and may pounce on you in self defense. Instead, walk up gently to a dog and see how he responds before you start further interaction.

Do not touch a dog through the fence.
If you are touching your neighbor's pet through a fence then you are telling him that you may be a thief. It is obvious that the dog will be alarmed and may even bite. So, it is better to go to your neighbor's house if you want to be friendly with their canine.

Do not go near an aggressive dog.
Pet dogs too show signs of aggressive behavior such as grinding teeth, hysterical barking or growling. If the dog shows any of these signs then it is in your interest that you stay away from him.

Do not grab a dog.

You may want to get all cuddled up with your friend's or neighbor's pet. But, this does not mean that you can grab him straight away. Gently take the dog into your arms before you get rough.

Do not approach a dog that is eating.
Dogs hate to be disturbed when they are eating or enjoying their favorite treats. So, if the dog is in possession of a bone or some other kind of treat; make sure that you do not disturb him.

Do not hurt the dog.
You may want to play with the dog but make sure that you do not hurt him in the process. Kids are often tempted to pull the dog's tail or ear. This can make the dog angry and he may pounce at you.

Do not run if a dog is chasing you.
This is the golden rule to follow in case you want to avoid being attacked by a dog. The more you run. The more the dog will get encouraged to chase you. Instead stop and do not show any signs of threat.

Do not make eye contact with dogs.

Making an eye contact with dogs gives them a warning sign. Eye contact should particularly be avoided if the pet is threatening or shows signs of aggressiveness. Back off slowly and in a non threatening manner.
