When looking for a dog for your family, you need to have a good idea of how to go about looking for the perfect canine companion. Adding a sweet and cute little puppy or an adult dog into your family is a much anticipated event. You have to be sure that you are making the right choice.  There is a number of things that you have to consider when making such a choice.

-  Observe the dog’s behavior: It is very important to observe the puppy’s temperament and behavior before selecting one. The puppy should appear to be either lethargic or aggressive. This will help you to make the right choice in selecting a suitable pup for you and your family.
 
- Another thing to be considered is pet care. You should read up information in things like dog feeding, potty training, health and the type of accessories that you may need for your dog. Consulting a veterinarian friend and doing some research on the internet will definitely be helpful.

- You need to consider the traits of certain breeds before selecting one. A Labrador is a very good choice in case you have an infant at home as this breed is known to be friendly towards children. Needless to say, a Labrador requires a lot of yard space to exercise.  A small house with a small yard or without a yard is just not suitable for a Labrador.

Similarly, a one room kitchenette on the fifth floor would be suitable for a poodle or a Yorkshire terrier and not a Great Dane.

- Another thing that you need to address is why you need a dog in your family. Are you buying or adopting a pet as a playmate for your kids or as companions for elderly relatives. Do you want your pet to act as your companion or as your guard? These are some questions that you need to answer before you select a dog.

Try to go for older dogs that have been trained as they are easier to handle.
