Instilling Recall In Your Dog
RECALL is a dog training phrase that indicates compliance when the dog is asked to come. But more than often, dogs do not indicate this perfect behavior as expected out of them. You may call your lovely canine a hundred times, but chances are that he may run away each time waiting for you to chase. So what to do in this case? The problem may sound complicated but the solution is quite simple.

Understand the dog’s perception of the command
The first and foremost thing that you need to do in order to improve your dog’s recall is to understand his thinking. For you the simple command COME may mean the dog to come along and sit next to you. But does that mean same to your dog as well? May be not. Your dog may have his own perceptions of the command COME. In such cases it is likely that he is not going to follow as instructed.

At times 'come' may be taken as inviting the dog for something that he may not like but is necessary. This could be anything like giving your doggy a bath, feeding him with medicines that he hates or brushing his hair. If this is what your dog thinks of 'come' there is no reason for him to follow your command.

Teach your dog to come
Once you have understood that your dog's perceptions about come are not so positive, it is time to rectify those perceptions with the right training. Stand about six feet away from your dog and call out his name in an upbeat voice followed by 'come.' No start moving away from the dog. At the same time hold your dog's favorite food till the nose.

Once your dog is lured and starts approaching you, let him come a little closer. Now hold the treat a little higher guiding your dog to sit. Once your dog is settled reward him with the treat. This will teach your dog that the 'come' command may not be bad all the time. It can be for his good too.

Repeat this exercise a number of times, till your dog achieves perfection. Once you are sure that the dog is trained enough, it is time to change his environment. Try doing the same exercise in a number of environments. You could even make the process slightly difficult by adding an element of distraction.

Though understanding of your dog behavior and training him accordingly are the prime things you need to do to improve his recall, nothing helps more than a great bonding. Try bonding with your dog to the max that is the best form of training you can impart.
