How to Teach the Six Basic Commands to Your Dog?

Having a dog around can be a whole lot of fun. The feeling of having an ever available companion who is around all the time is simply unmatched. But this feeling may wither away if your dog is one of the disobedient kinds. It is important that you teach your dog some basic rules of obedience and train him for a few basic commands. There are six commands that you must teach your dog fairly well i.e. SIT, DOWN, HEEL, STAY, RELEASE and COME.

SIT
Your dog should know exactly when you want him to be seated. For this purpose training him for the sit command is mandatory. Reach out for your dog’s favorite food and hold it exactly above his head. Your canine friend will tilt back his head and his eyes will follow the food.

Gradually the dog will bend his back legs. As soon as he does that, instruct him by saying ‘sit.' Your dog will sit down naturally after which you can give him the food he has been eyeing on.

Slowly, you can start reducing this reward and then finally eliminate it, once the dog completely understands the sit command.

DOWN
While your dog is sitting simply take a piece of food near its nose and move it downward. Your dog will start to lower himself following the food. As soon as he lowers himself, you should simply say ‘down,’ followed by the dog name.  Keep lowering your hand till the time your dog is completely down.

STAY
The stay command needs to be given when the dog is sitting. Simply say ‘stay’ along with showing your palm to the dog to reinforce the command. Once the dog follows your instruction, reward him after a brief pause. Continue the exercise by simply extending the duration each time.

COME
It is important that your dog comes running at your first call.

To train your dog for the ‘come’ command, call your dog by his name and say ‘come’ accompanied by an inward action of the palm. As he comes near you, instruct him to sit and reward him with his favorite food.

HEEL
When the dog is sitting on your left, hold a treat in your right hand. As soon as he spots the treat instruct your dog by saying ‘heel’ followed by his name. Once the dog begins to heel you could start moving the treat upwards. To encourage your dog you could even keep out doling out little bits from the treat. This will motivate him to heel higher. If your dog accomplishes this one, he does deserve a bigger treat this time.

Though it is the capabilities of the master that really counts in teaching the dog, a few handy tips are always welcome. Here are some tips that can make the teaching process a bit simpler.

• While teaching it is always better to use a leash or a collar because you never know when the canine may get out of control.

• Take it slow and steady. Don’t try to teach everything at a one go.

• Focus on one particular command in a single session.

• Don’t make the session too long else your dog shall get bored and will not want to learn more.
