How to Introduce a New Pet to the Household?
So you are excited about having a new pet in addition to the ones you already have at home? You have crafted the perfect space for your new pet and even arranged all the possible luxuries for him. But wait a minute. Isn’t there something that you are missing out on? What about the pets that have adorned your home for so long? While you may be excited, your existing pets may have the reverse feelings for the one who is about to arrive.

Your current pets are surely not going to give a hearty welcome to the newly arrived. In fact expect aggressive behavior. Such behavior from your existing pets is quite obvious. After all it was their home first and they might not be really happy with sharing their abode with someone else. But nevertheless there is something that you can do to seek a safe entry of your new pet into your house.

Have a separate room for your new pet ready beforehand. You could allocate him a small space in the bathroom or bedroom or simply get a crate. Arrange for all the things that your new pet might need such as food, water, and litter box. However you need to make sure that this room is far from where your current pet stays.

Before you acquaint the newly arrived pooch to the entire house, give him some time to explore his immediate surroundings. Take him straight to his room and let him get comfortable with the place where he shall be staying the maximum first. To tell your dog that the allocated area is his personal space, spend maximum time with the dog in this space only.

Now you need to create a transparent barrier between your new and existing pet so that you can bring the two on either side. Something like a door with a wire mesh or a glass door should be helpful. This is a safe way of introducing the two pets, as they shall be able to see each other but not pounce because of the barrier. Let your pets know each other through the barrier.

It’s time to arrange a lovely meeting for your two adorned pets. But make sure that the meeting is in a controlled environment. Leash your dog so that the moment there is aggressive behavior, you can separate the two. If things go well you can arrange for a second time, but this time a bit longer. Let the two be a bit closer. Sniffing or playing with each other should be allowed. Repeat this exercise, till the two get along well and you are sure of no violence happening at home.
