Consider this: Border Collies are reared as herding dogs and are still used on farms across the world. But now they are used as pet dogs too. With the change in occupation comes the need to give them plenty of exercise and games to stimulate their natural instincts. If you don’t do that and keep your dog confined to your house, he will turn aggressive, destructive, or extremely bored. And that is in addition to health concerns like obesity, heart ailments, diabetes and orthopedic problems like hip dysplasia.
Dog exercises
So how much and what kind of exercise should you give your dog? It depends on the temperament, age and breed of your dog. If he is active and young, he needs much more than half hour walks round the block. Companion dogs can do with a walk and playing around in the house. Remember the saying: “A tired dog is a well-behaved dog.” Give him enough activity that leaves him a bit tired at the end of the day.
* Most dogs need two half-hour walks daily.
* Active dogs need short but intense bursts of jogging.
* Toy dogs need enough activity in the garden.
* All dogs, especially the intelligent breeds, need mentally stimulating games.
* Don’t make your dog run for miles on leash. Dogs prefer short bursts interspersed with sniffing and absorbing the nature.
* Hot and cold weather is not good for taking your dog out. Engage him in running up and down the stairs instead.
* Senior dogs should be allowed to walk at their own pace, else they could suffer joint injuries.
* Take your dog to both known and new surroundings. Dogs like to visit their favorite spots as well as explore the new.
* Don’t overdo the tedious running. Give him water breaks to keep him nice and hydrated.
Games, mental exercises and stimulation:
* Dog parks are great for games and socialization. If the area is properly fenced, you can put your dog off the leash. Check whether he enjoys the dog park. If you notice signs of fear, stop going there.
* Play fetch games with your dog. Teach him commands like ‘drop it’.
* Play Frisbee or flyball.
* Agility training is great for stimulation. Buy the equipment or make your own using old tires, tubes, planks and anything that you can gather.
* Involve your dog in a tug-of-war.
* Swimming is one of the best physical and mental sports for your dog.
* Have your dog work for his food and stimulate his brain. Keep the food in toys rather than open bowls. Or hide the food somewhere and let your dog sniff it out.
* Toss up the kibbles and make him jump around.
