Owning a dog comes with responsibilities like providing him with essential supplies. Luckily there are far too many people ready to help you out with more than essentials. You don't really need everything that they offer, but what are the basic dog supplies anyway? Let's take a look.

Collar:
A dog collar is the most basic and essential of dog supplies. It is used for identification and control. Tags and medical information is often attached to the collar. Collars used in conjunction with a leash are necessary for controlling the dog manually.

Leash:
You need a leash attached to the collar to walk your dog. You need to control your dog and restrain him from chasing wild. Collars and leashes are the only way of making a fashion statement outdoors, if at all they matter to the dog!
 
Food:
Dog foods are available in tons of varieties from basic to premium. Dogs need all the nutrition they can get to be healthy and look healthy. Foods come packed with these but you've got to watch out for the fads. You can of course feed your dog with home food prepared from ingredients purchased from groceries. But many prefer the convenience of commercial dog food as it has a long shelf life. Dog treats are those foods you give your dog as a reward, in addition to staple meals.

Bowl:
Bowls for food and water come in several varieties too! Everybody wants good looking designer bowls for their pets. Bowls come in ceramic, stainless steel or melamine.

Bed:
Dogs sleep for half of the 24 hours that make a day, and you need to provide them a comfortable bed to help them enjoy. You need to look for a bed that is chew-proof, durable and washable so that it sustains doggie onslaughts. There are beds with removable cushions available, so you can customize it to your liking.

Kennel / crate:
Kennels and crates are for pampering your dog with separate retreat zones and can be used for housebreaking activities. You can take crates with you on vacations to keep your dog in check.

Grooming equipment:
Maintaining hygiene is a basic requirement and you'll need to groom your dog with a tub, shampoos, brushes, combs, nail clipper, towels, tick remover, sprays, etc. Hairy dogs need more equipment to stay clean and fresh.

Toys:
Since you cannot be with your dog all the time, you need to keep him entertained with toys. You can also use toys to enhance your time with your dog. Dogs love games like fetching and tug-of-war. Toys are important to keep dogs active. Toys play a vital role during training too.

Luxuries:
If you like pampering, there are innumerable luxurious items you can buy. Even basic dog supplies have as much designer variety as there are for humans. Simply step into a pet store and see for yourself.
