Assistance Dog Harnesses
If a dog is entrusted with the task of physical or mobility assistance then it would need an assistance dog harness. This is a special type of dog harness. It is more padded around the breasts, something which ensures that the dog doesn't feel too much pressure when pulling something. The sturdiness of the design would depend upon the purpose which it intends to serve- acting as a brace, gently leading somebody or physically pulling a wheelchair.
A pet harness is usually worn in conjunction with a pet collar. It can be used as an alternative to leash attachment, thereby providing the dog with some more dignity, comfort and safety. With awareness spreading rapidly about these aspects of using a dog harness, they have suddenly become a hot commodity amongst dog owners.
Pet dog harnesses are wrapped around the torso of the pet dog. This reduces the chances of the dog choking itself to death in a bid to escape from it. Also, since the harness is worn around the torso, it becomes difficult for the dog to undo it and escape.
Modern day dog harnesses now sport a sportier and cloth like look. Hence, dogs can wear them all by themselves or wear them under dog clothes. Manufacturers of dog clothes have also taken note of their popularity and have started incorporating strategically placed buttons to attach the lead to the harness.
Sled Dog Harness
Sled dog harnesses are more rugged and reinforced then assistance dog harnesses. They are designed in such a manner that the dog is able to pull more than its body weight. These come in the following types:
* Freight harness: They are meant for pulling freight. Their design is similar to H-back harness. However, there is extra padding provided on the chest band. This evens out the weight pulled by the dog.
* H-back harness: They are also meant to pull freight.
* X-back harness: These are primarily meant to race and are lighter and shorter.
With the increasing popularity of the sport of skijoring, more types of harnesses are being developed. Out of the harnesses developed for sporting activities the Y-back harness has gained the major popularity. In it, the tug-line is attached to the middle-point of the harness and it stretches either parallel to the ground or goes upwards towards the bicycle or the skier.
