Children love puppies and dogs as companions. Their love towards them is defined more by the sense of energetic curiosity that both share. Both love to explore the world around them, to fool around in it. Hence, if you have an only child in the family or don’t have your child’s friends always around, you can gift him/her a puppy/dog.

However, before you do so there are a few things to be kept in mind. As both of them would be playmates, choose a dog from an active, sturdy breed. Breeds that are medium or slightly big in size are perfect to play with kids. But if you have a child below 3 years, avoid smaller breeds who don’t respond well to rough handling. In all cases, do ensure that the dog is trained to handle young kids.

Beagles
This breed can be an excellent playmate for your child. They are adept in tracking and can run very fast as well. Your child can rely upon it while playing hide and seek or similar games. Further, they have a history of being family dogs. Their presence has adorned the families of many English families since the Elizabethan times.

Border Collies
Originally a herding breed, these dogs are known for their intelligence. They can also be family as well as sport dogs. Hence, your child can expect a more intelligent, energetic, protective and loving company in its form.

Boxers
This breed is more of the intelligent, protective type. They won’t fool around much and would keep your child away from things that could possibly harm them. The puppies can be powerful and can give your child a vigorous, daily dose of exercise. Go ahead and get one if you want your child to become strong athletic type.

Golden or Labrador retrievers
This breed is considered to be one amongst the safest bets. It is friendly, would be willing to do everything to please you and is soft in its approach to delicate things such as your child. Just like kids, they too love water and fooling around in it.

Shetlands
This breed is an intelligent, family oriented breed. Its most distinct feature is its ability to adapt itself to any kind of living space. Hence, whether you have an apartment or a country house it can easily settle itself down. Further, they are very vocal dogs and can give your child a very healthy, exciting competition.

West Highland White Terriers
This particular breed is very cute to look at. Due to that they can easily become the darling of your child. However, when it comes to taking care of them, you can’t do what you do to your child- bathe it. They are prone to allergies and dry skin issues. Hence, frequent baths are strictly to be avoided.
