So you have a new canine at home? But he is not too friendly. There is nothing to worry. Like humans, dogs too take their own time to get affable with anyone. You need to give the dog a fair amount of time to open up and get comfortable with his new surroundings. Don’t force him to play with you immediacy on his arrival. Time is the biggest factor that can bond you and your canine friend. But apart from giving time, there are few things that you can do to pet your newly arrived pooch.

While you are in the process of petting a dog, you should always begin by observing his behavior. Some dogs may be a little aggressive and being extra friendly with them in the very beginning can have negative consequences. Make sure there is no growling or jumping. Also check whether the dog has his tail between his legs or not. If the dog does not show any signs of aggression you can proceed with the petting.

Show the back of your hand to the dog. Slightly curl your fingers to form a loose fist. This will protect your fingers from being bitten even if the dog tends to get a bit aggressive. Keep your hand slightly above the nose of the dog. The dog may take a little while to respond, so be a little patient. Let him recognize things around and give him an opportunity to sniff your hand.

The dog may sniff your hand for a little while. This is the time he is making sure that you are the right person. If the dog looks up at you then consider it as a positive response. Now that the dog is being receptive enough, you are safe to open your hand. Have your fingers extended; there is nothing to be scared of.

Watch the behavior of your dog once you open your hand. If he still reacts positively and does not show any signs of aggression, it’s stroking time. But since this is the first time you are going to be stroking the dog, make sure you are gentle enough. Begin by stroking the jaw of your pooch. Make sure you do that really gently. Once your stroking is approved, proceed to the head. While stroking do not touch any of the private areas as the dog may get really fierce.

Now that you have almost laid a proper foundation, it is time to head on.  Rub him behind his ears, pat him and caress him even more. Spend more time with your pet and let him know he is cared for. Rest time will take care of.
