As almost all dog owners, especially those who have kept a dog for the first time will testify, housebreaking a dog is one of the most important and the first things that you need to do with your dog. It can be a frustrating experience and it may be relatively easy with some breeds than it is with others. After all, you just cannot expect to ask a dog to go poop in a particular place and expect it to follow your instructions from then onwards. There are some tips that you can follow to make life easier for yourself and the dog. First of all, dogs need to be housebroken. They have to be trained to go and do the act in a certain place. You should start housebreaking your pup is when it is between 8 to 12 weeks old. When it answers the call of nature inside the house, look at it sternly and say no. Do not be too harsh as you are just beginning to housebreak the dog. The dog should realize that doing it inside the house is wrong. Make sure you clean the remains of the poop in case it has done it inside the house. Take the dog outside after it has eaten or early morning and designate an area where you want it to poop. Look at the dog and say poop. If the dog does its act outside, then give it an affectionate pat. It will realize that it should be answering the call of nature outside. You may have to carry out this routine for a long time before the dog actually realizes what you want from it. Do not expect that it will learn overnight. Accidents can and will happen. With a little bit of patience you can certainly housebreak your dog. The trick is in being consistent in what you want your dog to do. |
