Create confidence
This is one of the best things that you can do to deal with latchkey dogs. Latchkey dogs tend to become insecure and nurse the feeling that their owners will leave them some day. You need to create confidence in your pet that you will be there to take care of all his needs both- emotional as well as physical. Try to make your pet feel secure by looking after all his daily needs.
Many pet owners over indulge with their pets once they are back home. They give in to every demand that their pet makes. This is partly as a result of an attempt of gauzing the guilt that pet owners deal with due to leaving their pooch alone. Stop over indulging with your pet because this will only make your pet feel lonelier when you are gone. Do spend some quality time with your pet once you are back. But, make sure that you do not indulge into extra pampering.
Act as a leader
Dogs are basically 'pack animals'. They are used to living in a group under the guidance of a leader. But many a times, pet owners let their dogs take over and act as a leader. Don't let that happen as this will only make your pet more aggressive and dictating. Your dog will try not to let you go out for work, which will make matters worse. Act as a leader and make your dog understand that he has to live alone.
Heat therapy
Like human beings, heat therapy works for pets too. Your dog is bound to get stressed after dealing with a day of loneliness. Heat therapy helps de-stress your dogs. You may consider using conventional heating pads, but they are slightly risky to use as they might hurt your pet. You can give your pet a warm water bath. This will relax muscle tension and also pep up your pet's mood.
Employ them
Give your dog a job before you are gone. By default, dogs were meant to work. However, the changing times have made them mere receivers of luxuries. Give your dog something to do. This will keep him engrossed and he will not get bored.
Tire your pet
Before you are off to work, make sure that you tire your pet to the core. Let him run as far as he can. Try to take him for a walk. Make him exercise or play with him. So, while you are away, your dog will be too tired to realize his loneliness or your absence.
