There are different breeds of dogs in this world. There are many breeds of dogs that are associated with and have originated in various nations. The country of Japan is famous for some of the best breeds of dogs. The Shiba Inu is one of the ancient breeds of Japanese dogs. Dogs of this breed resemble the Akita breed, although they are smaller in size.

The term Shiba in Japanese literally means bush. Although the exact reason that the term is used to describe this breed is not known, legend has it that this breed of dog was used to hunt bush animals or are have a color that resembles a red bush.  Alternatively in ancient Japanese, the term Shiba also refers to a small size.

This breed has a head that resembles a fox. It has cheeks that are chubby and eyes shaped like almonds. Both these features combine to give the dog a very oriental sort of appearance. It has two coats and sheds hair seasonally.  It requires grooming and its coat should be brushed regularly.

The people of Japan love this breed as it is intelligent and has traits that make it a good watchdog. It is a dog that is very protective about its territory. Apart from their intelligence, these dogs are very strong willed dogs and should be managed by a single owner or trainer. Owners should emphasize control and authority from an early stage in their relationship with dogs of this breed. Dogs of this breed should be socialized with other members of the family from a very young age.

These dogs are very dissimilar to other canines in the way they express them selves when they are very happy or are agitated. They let out what is known as the ‘Shiba Scream’; a high pitched and loud noise that is very much like a scream.

It is an ancient, noble and loved breed that is a favorite with the people of not only Japan but also throughout the world.
