This particular breed of dog is perhaps the most misunderstood of dog breeds. It is undoubtedly a muscular, aggressive and very powerful breed of dog. The very appearance of a fully-grown Rottweiler is intimidating. It is undoubtedly one of the most ferocious of dog breeds. Unfortunately, it has received a lot of negative publicity. As a result, it has acquired the reputation of a monster.

Let us take a look at the history of the breed. It was originally used in ancient Rome as a guardian of cattle. It had a role that was quite different from the role of a typical sheep dog or a herding dog as it actually guarded the cattle against cattle thieves. It carried out other tasks like carrying purses containing valuables and money around its neck.

The revival of interest in the breed has taken place during the first and second world wars, where the capabilities of this breed were used extensively. Coming back to its negative reputation, let us remember that dogs of this breed are extremely powerful and can be used as attack dogs. These dogs have inherent traits of guarding its flock. A number of incidents where dogs of this breed fatally attacked humans and other dogs have been reported.

These incidents are purely because of bad or no training, abuse, lack of socialization, bad handling or unethical breeding practices that might involve breeding these dogs for aggressive traits. In the hands of a firm, responsible and consistent owner who exposes the puppy to young children and other members of the family from a young age, the Rottweiler will grow up to be a well-behaved and motivated dog that will get aggressive only when guarding the owner and members of the family.

This particular dog is said to possess a scissors bite along with a look of loyalty and goodwill in its eyes. It has a short, hard and thick coat that goes really well with the docked tail. Proper training given early ensures a well behaved and reliable pet that would do anything to guard you and your family. But, the owner has to understand its need of socialization, leadership and companionship.

Even if you have an apartment, you could comfortably keep this dog. All that you have to take care of is that it gets proper exercise. You would have to make sure that you take it out for a jog or run daily so that it is able to get its share of workout.

The Rottweiler is a lot of responsibility. Just like buying a high-powered sports car in place of an average luxury sedan. The choice is yours. Once you make it, you have to live up to the responsibility.
