Characterized by a peculiar muzzle and shuffling gait, the bulldog comes from England as is known for its affable demeanor while looking fierce. Bulldogs are medium sized adorable dogs that deeply care for their family. They are classified as non-sporting.

Coat:

The color of the coat is one of red brindle, solid white, solid red, fawn/fallow or piebald. Coat is straight, short, close, smooth and glossy. It is of fine texture with no fringe, feather or curl. Shedding is average.

The skin is soft and loose. Characteristic heavy wrinkles cover the head, face and throat in two pendulous folds.

Height: 12 – 15 inches

Weight: In the US, typical males are 50 pounds and females are 40 pounds. The original British breeds are about 10 pounds heavier.

Temperament:

Bulldogs are extremely equable, loving, kind and devoted to their family. They have a quirky sense of humor and get along with everybody including other pets. Although their demeanor is pacific and dignified, they spring to their master’s defense courageously and resolutely. They are not vicious or aggressive but tough against strangers.

Gait:

Bulldogs have a characteristic loose-jointed, shuffling, sidewise motion. Pedigree dogs have an action that is unrestrained, free and vigorous.

Grooming and maintenance:

Bulldogs need to be brushed occasionally with short and hard bristles. Since the coat is short and straight, they don’t need to be bathed frequently. But drooling is common and wiping is necessary. Their heavy face folds need to be cleaned daily to avoid infection. Teeth need to be brushed everyday with a soft brush. Since the tail is tight to the body, there is always a chance of infection in that area. Daily cleaning of the area beneath the tail is necessary.

Bulldogs thrive on whatever is fed to them and are not fussy. They are low on maintenance.

Energy level:

Bulldogs have a calm demeanor and don’t like to run hard or chase. They are not good jogging partners and prefer to stride at their own pace. But they love to play around in the garden and need exercise to avoid becoming obese.

Health:

Bulldogs are susceptible to breathing problems because of the short and unusual muzzle. Most of them snore loudly.

Bulldogs can develop cysts between the toes that need to be treated by a vet. They are also prone to cherry eye, allergies and hip problems especially among senior dogs.

The tail could develop infections if not thoroughly cleaned daily.

Bulldogs are extremely sensitive to both heat and cold. Special care needs to be taken during warm weather. They need to be provided with a cool shade and plenty of water.
