The Basset Hound breed of dog is officially classified as a hound dog, even though it is the result of cross breeding between different dog breeds. The origins of these dogs could be traced back to the eighteenth century. This breed of dog has its origins in France and at one point of time was a very popular breed in the United Kingdom. There was a short phase when the popularity of this breed slumped. Today, however this breed is considered to be a very popular breed of dog. Basset dogs can prove to be ideal family pet if they are trained well from an early age. It is however not very easy to train and to housebreak dogs of this breed. Training this breed requires a lot of patience and perseverance as these dogs can be very stubborn. These dogs have a very stocky build and as they are hound dogs, they have a great sense of smell. As a matter of fact, their sense of smell is second only to the bloodhound. Their sense of smell might result in their being distracted very easily, and then it becomes very difficult to get their attention. Very affectionate and loving, these dogs are naturally tolerant towards members of the family and children. They do not have a vicious temperament. Basset hounds are however not timid and can be aggressive, if required. If you are planning to get a dog of this breed as a pet, you need to keep in mind that they need a lot of exercise or they tend to gain weight. In case you are the sort of person who likes lying on the couch, then your Basset Hound may become overweight. These dogs are voracious eaters and it is always advisable to feed them two to three small meals instead of one large meal in a day. Basset Hounds are a great family pet. They have quirky behavior and are fun and affectionate to be with. |
