The Anatolian Shepherd Breed of Dog

Bread originally in Anatolia in Turkey, the Anatolian Shepherd was used to guard flocks of sheep from predators such as wolves, jackals and bears.

Anatolian shepherd dogs are among some of the most efficient of surveillance dogs. They are known for their agility. As is the case with any other watchdog breed, these dogs need to be trained intensively. Proper training helps them not only to become good watchdogs but also domesticates them. If a dog of this breed is not trained properly, it may become wild. Dogs of this breed are very independent in nature.

These Anatolian Shepherd puppies are known for their aggressive tendencies. Dogs of this breed have a strong built and can easily fit into the role of a hunting dog. A loyal Anatolian shepherd is ferocious enough to defend its master from humans and some of these dogs have been known to attack and kill bears.

Fully-grown dogs of this breed can weigh up to a hundred pounds. These dogs have a very thick coat that needs grooming.

The breed does not suffer from many health problems and has a mean age of 10.75 years. It is certainly not a breed that you want to keep if you have a small house or an apartment. These dogs need to have daily exercise or they may become hyperactive and restless. It is a perfect pet for an outdoor type of person or an army man.

It is not very comfortable in a family and needs to be exposed to small children from a young age. It is very protective of family members, but is wary of strangers.

It is definitely a challenge as a pet and not meant for a first time dog owner. With proper training and handling, it can become a very good guardian of you and your family.
