Most of us have heard of common dog breeds such as the German Shepherd, the Beagle or the Bloodhound. There are certain dog breeds that are not very common. We do not come across these breeds every day, as they are not so popular.

The first breed that is not very common is the Affenpinscher. It is a toy breed and does not exceed 11 inches in height and 7 pounds in weight, when fully grown. It has a long and shaggy dark coat.
Dogs of this breed are considered as ideal family pets and are very easy to train.

The second dog on this list is the Anatolian shepherd. This is a big dog that weighs in between 80 to 150 pounds. It is an independent minded dog that is very challenging as a pet and definitely not recommended for a person who is keeping a dog for the first time. The breed’s origin is in Turkey. It was used to guard sheep and cattle against wolves and other predators.

The third uncommon breed of dog is the Basenji. This dog is medium sized dog and is muscular in build. One of the peculiar characteristics of this dog is that it does not bark. It is not very suitable as a family pet and it has to be extensively trained and socialized with younger children.

The fourth breed of dog is called the Bouvier des Flandres or just Bouvier for short. The breed has its origin in France where it was used extensively as cattle and sheepherders. It is an aggressive dog but has enormous self-control and a stable temperament that makes it ideal as a family pet and a guard dog.

The fifth breed is the Central Asian Ovtcharka. This is a big muscular and massive dog that weighs in at a73 pounds before it reaches the age of two years. This breed of dog is a very dominant in nature. Intensive training and socialization is required as a pet.

The last breed on the list is the Polish Owczarek Nizinny. It is a medium sized muscular dog with a long shaggy coat of hair. These dogs get along well with children and are good as family pets as long as they are socialized a bit.
