Shih Tzu
If you are looking for a dog breed that exuberates energy and yet does not cause any trouble at home then the Shih Tzu is the best bet. A native to china, this dog is vaguely associated to the lion because of its looks. Unlike many other breeds, the Shih Tzu is not a complete attention seeker. It can be all by himself but would require some doting from you.

The dog is perfect for apartment life and can do well even without a yard. However, the dog needs to be kept away from the heat strictly at all times. The dog is good for adults and children alike but should be avoided with very young children.

Appearance
A long, flowing double coat is perhaps the trademark of this dog breed. The coat may be slightly wavy and often sweeps the ground. You could let his long hair flow or style them in a nice summer cut. A short snout and large eyes are some other peculiar traits of this breed.

The Shih Tzu also has a palm like tail that keeps on wagering above its torso. Average height of the dog varies anywhere between nine to ten and half inches. While opting for this dog make sure it is neither too leggy nor too low stationed.

Health
Since the Shih Tzu has a long back and short legs, they are more prone to spinal disc diseases. Wheezing and snoring is also common with this breed. Liver shunt, renal dysplasia, and hip dysplasia are common problems with these dogs.

The Shih tzu cannot bear high temperatures so should always be kept away from the heat. Also the teeth of these dogs need regular attention as these dogs lose their teeth early. Make sure that you do not overfeed the Shih Tzu because they can put on weight fairly easily.

Temperament
The Shih Tzu has a dual temperament. The dog can be extremely playful and lively. But at the same time it can be docile and quite too. Firstly, this dog is an absolute companion. Its playful and energetic nature makes him an ideal companion. The dog gels along well with all members including kids and other pets too.

At the same time these dogs can be absolutely quiet. Absolutely self-assured, this dog breed can watch out his own. The Shih Tzu can also make for a perfect watchdog. Leaving these dogs alone for a long time may result in serious behavioral problems and can even cause them to be destructive.

Training
Crate training is the best way to housetrain this breed. The Shih Tzu is quick to learn and easy to teach. But at times the dog may act a little stubborn, and may not follow your orders. In such cases persistence is the key. Never ever try to be harsh with this dog or punishing him. Low key but motivational training pays the best for this breed.
