Pugs are truly a world apart from other dog breeds. Aptly described by the Latin phrase 'multum in parvo' meaning much in little, these dogs have a great personality that is packed into a small size. Their wonderful personality more than makes up for their slightly unconventional wrinkly bulldog like faces. Most owners however find the pug an attractive looking dog. A stocky build, pugs usually weigh around a maximum of 18 pounds and reach a height of 14 inches when fully grown. They are available in apricot, silver, fawn and black colors although fawn and black are the most common colors. This is a very fun loving breed and its stern expression belies its nature, which is that of a frolicking and playful little monkey. It is a highly obedient and sociable dog that is eager to please and easy to train. They love to be in the company of their owner and family and may become slightly disturbed if no one plays with them. Although not very high on intelligence, these dogs more than make it up by there sheer sense of joy and fun. The fact that it is a very playful dog limits its effectiveness as a watchdog. In spite of that, owners are very loyal to the breed because of the love and affection that they provide. Besides being playful and having fun, there is one more thing that pugs love to do. They love to eat. As a result, many pugs can be overweight. If you have a pug, then watch its diet and always take it out for exercise. Pugs are always prancing around everywhere so be careful where you put your feet. Another precaution that you should take with pugs is not to let them in an enclosed area that is hot or lacks air. Pugs have a problem regulating their body temperature and cannot stand temperatures above 27 Degrees C for too long. Health of pugs is a slight issue. They are usually prone to suffering from eye injuries like puncture wounds, scratched corneas and painful Entropion. Also, the pugs have compact breathing passageways which make it difficult for them to breathe properly. This is the reason why they are not suggested to be kept in very hot conditions fore long. Ignorance could even result in death in some cases. The visual appeal of these little creatures has made them a favorite with the media these days. You could find them playing a part in various movies and commercial advertisements. All in all, it is a wonderful, mischievous and playful breed that is fun to have around. |
