Temperament:
With proper training APBTs can be extremely obedient and loyal. Their natural tendency is to be aggressive especially towards other animals but they can be taught to be friendly with strangers. They often bark when the doorbell rings but will be affectionate with the people who come in.
With the family they are good natured and affectionate. But it largely depends on the way they are brought up. They need to be raised with a firm hand or else they can get stubborn. Only people who know how to deal with dogs and their psychology should think of having an APBT as a pet.
Trained APBTs get along well with children in the house and can take rough play in their stride. They are amusing to play with and never tire playing games. But they should never be left alone with the neighbor’s kids as they are not inherently passive.
Activity:
APBTs are athletic and intelligent. They love dog sports and purebreds are known to excel in a variety of competitions. They have high energy levels and can be trained for various work disciplines.
APBTs need lots of exercise like jogging, long walks and play. Else they could get frustrated, bored and at times destructive.
Health:
APBT is a healthy breed and generally not prone to severe health issues. But some dogs could be affected by hip dysplasia, cataracts and congenital heart diseases. Allergies towards grass could also be a concern.
Grooming:
APBT does not need much grooming. The coat is short and smooth which makes grooming very easy. Brushing can be done with short and hard bristles. Bathing need not be frequent; dry shampooing can be done as deemed necessary. Shedding is average.
