During the 1800’s in Britain, Lord Tweedmouth was trying to develop a new breed of dogs. He wanted his new breed to be not only loyal and kind, but also high-spirited and agile. The result was the Golden Retriever.

The Golden Retriever, as the name itself suggests, was an embodiment of good looks and intelligence in a dog. The fur was golden and it doubled up as a retriever. The feet were padded and the double coat was thick, shiny and wavy. This gave the breed its typical characteristic of love for water and water sports. However, the dog also inherited the restlessness from its parents.

The Golden Retriever always craves for human attention and companionship. Hence, it cannot be left alone for too long. This could make it mischievous and inattentive to training. The breed is also not at all suitable as a guard dog.

The Golden Retriever has a sweet, polite, loveable, and a highly intelligent temperament. They remain patient and gentle with kids and friendly with other pets. It is a very friendly dog.

Constant supervision on its meals and regular exercises would be required as your pet would be a big eater. You will have to take it out for jogs or brisk walks to keep it in shape.

Therefore, before going for a Golden Retriever you must make sure that you have at least a medium-sized securely fenced yard attached to your house. Golden Retrievers have also been known to do well in apartments provided you can take your pet out for a daily rigor.

Besides these your dog would also be a heavy shedder. Therefore, it would require thorough brushing with firm bristles on a daily basis. Dry shampooing would be required on a regular basis. Bathing, however, would be necessary only on occasions with a mild shampoo.

The Golden Retriever is also prone to cataracts, dysplasia and skin allergies. And it has a tendency to gain weight. Therefore, diet control is a must for this dog. The average weight of a male should vary between 65-75 lbs. The females should weigh between 55-65 lbs. However, this is in conformation with the height which should vary between 23-24 inches and 21.5-22.5 inches, respectively.

Training comes easiest to the Golden Retriever. It is particularly talented in competitive obedience, narcotic detection and performing tricks. Besides these, it can also be an excellent therapy and a service dog. So much so that the Golden Retriever has earned itself the reputation of being the world’s best family and companion pet.
