Dog's Help

This dog breed is more commonly known as Bordeaux Mastiff or French Mastiff. It is one of the oldest French breeds. Dogs of this breed are heavy and powerful and they have performed various tasks in the French society. These range from drawing heavy loads to guarding flocks of sheep.

Dimensions
The dog breed is not too small and not too big in size. Yet it is muscular and has a powerful build. The height of this breed varies between 23 and 27 inches (at shoulder). The minimum weight of an individual dog is a minimum of 100 lbs which then goes on increasing.

Appearance
The dog breed has a short and fine coat. It is quite soft to touch. The color of the short soft coat varies from shades of mahogany (deep ultra red) to fawn (light red) with a black, red or brown mask.

The breed is identified though the numerous folds of skin around the upper jaw, which then go on to cover the lower jaw as well. This makes them look somewhat similar to the Bulldog breed. The similarities end there as this breed is more agile, lean, and yet muscular.

Temperament
Dogs of this breed have a still temperament. They are calm and balanced and are highly intelligent. Since they have been used for centuries as work dogs, their present generations have inherited their obedience skills. This makes them extremely loyal and devoted to its owner and his/her family.

The primary task which it can perform today with ease is guarding. Just like the old days it can be an extremely vigilant and courageous keeper. One distinct trait of this keeper dog is that there is a lack of aggression. They would not aggressively attack any intruder. At the same time, they would not budge from their ground. Thus, it has become evident that the potency of the dog breed as guard dogs is still intact.

Apart from being guard and work dogs, dogs of Dogue de Bordeaux breed can prove to be good companions. They strike a loving bond with their owner and his/her family. Children would like to hang around these great friends. However, it is best that small children are kept away from them. This is only a precautionary suggestion and not a result of a perceived threat.

A few tips to train this dog
At times the dogs of this breed can be arrogant and stubborn as well. In order to minimize such tendencies, it is essential to train the dog. Owners should ensure that the training is a sustained, long-term one. Socialization with other animals and strangers is also to be incorporated in its training as it would help rein in any excessive aggression.
