The Dachshund breed,  popularly known as Wiener dogs because of their unusual shape, have their origin in Germany. The breed was originally nurtured and raised as hunting dogs.  Only during the last few decades, has this breed been increasingly accepted as pet dogs.

Although the breed is considered a small dog, its courage and occasional aggression is no less than that of bigger dogs. It is known as a large dog in a small package. On account of its small size it needs a great amount of care.

Since the breed is a hound, it has an exceptional sense of smell. It was used originally to hunt badgers or large rodents. The breed is very tough and hard working by nature and needs loads of exercise as a pet dog. Normally, these dogs weigh around ten to sixteen pounds. The miniature version may weigh less than ten pounds. It possesses either a very smooth coat of long hairy skin.

* Although it's a small breed, its features resemble those of a larger breed. The dog happens to be very muscular.

* Proper grooming and brushing is very important for this breed.

* The breed requires to be trained very well and from an early age.

* A properly brought up Dachshund can be very endearing to the family and is fun to play with.

* They need to be trained in order to behave properly with strangers.

* The dogs keep barking constantly if they find something unusual.

* The breed is not very prone to disease. The dogs are however prone to spinal problems if they are overweight or do not get enough exercise.

* The dog happens to be a vociferous eater and it often falls prey to overeating. Feeding should be well monitored.

* The dogs must be provided with proper workouts.

* The dogs should be potty trained from a very early age
