The Dachshund is one of the most popular of dog breeds that are available today. They are also affectionately referred to as wiener dogs because of their elongated body, loose skin, small legs and a barrel chest. Originating from Germany, dogs of this breed make great canine companions and are indeed a man’s best friend.

This breed’s behavior is quite different from that of other breeds. Though, they are very affectionate, amicable and loving by nature, your strictness and harshness may cause them to become stubborn. Therefore, it is difficult to train dogs of this breed.

Moreover, they believe in training their owner instead of getting trained by them. This quality distinguishes them from other dog breeds. They are smart, intelligent have a keen sense of smell and thus have the capability of becoming very good watch dogs.

Dachshunds are available in three varieties, smooth haired, long haired and wire haired.  Grooming requirements differ from one variety to another. The smooth haired ones have smooth and straight hair, the long haired ones have long and straight hair need to be trimmed at regular intervals and the wire haired ones have wiry, coarse and harsh hair. Grooming this last variety can be quite a challenge.

The dogs are available in sable, cream, black, red, tan and fawn colors to name a few. The sizes that the dogs are available in are toy, miniature and standard. The weight varies from just 8 pounds of the toy variety to twenty pounds of the standard variety of this breed.

The biggest risk to health of this dog breed is from problems of the spine that can be aggravated because of obesity and lack of exercise. They have a tendency to put on loads of weight. Therefore, you need to be very particular about what and how much you feed them. Otherwise this breed is not susceptible to any other major health problem.

Overall, dachshunds are great pets and if you give them proper pet care, they can provide you with a long term friendship.
