Once you have decided that you want to get a dog, there are many things that need to be considered to finalize the right pet for your family. "Breed" of the dog is an important consideration. Once settled on the breed, you would get a generalized idea of different characteristics, temperament, eating habits, and size of the new companion home.

Broadly speaking there are two grounds on the basis of which you can select the dog breed appropriate for your home. The foremost is your lifestyle, followed by the reason why you want a pet dog in your home.

You need to select the breed that suits the lifestyle of your family. For instance, if you have children in the family, you would definitely not want dogs who may overpower your kids in your absence. It is therefore better to avoid large boisterous breeds in a kids' home. However, these breeds may not intentionally harm your child, but because of their size, strength and excitability, they may cause injury. Labradors, Whippets and Golden Retrievers are some of the best breeds to live among families with children.

Similarly, if you love watching TV and lazing around in home at the weekends and during the evening, Border Collie would definitely not be a good choice for you. This is because these dogs are known to be very active. So, they are more suitable for people who love exercising or jogging, and need their dog to accompany them. Bolognese, Japanese Chin, Bullmastiff, Chihuahua, and Puggle are ideal dogs for lazy dog owners.

The next important consideration while choosing your pet dog is the reason why you want to have a pet dog in the house. For instance, in case you are an elder couple living alone and want a dog to ensure your protection. Herein, it is important to choose dog breeds that are, by nature, more protective and territorial. Golden Retriever or Poodle would then be of no help to you.

Great Dane, Pit Bull and German Shepherd are some of the suitable breeds for elders. However, these breeds are believed to be violent. Even by their appearance they seem to be intimidating to most people. This is why most people prefer these dog breeds for security purposes of their home.

Companionship is another reason why people prefer to introduce dogs in their family. When it comes to companionship, choosing the right dog breed is an extremely difficult task. With so many amazing dog breeds such as Terriers, Poodles and innumerable other breeds, it is entirely up to your preference. You may consider choosing on the basis of their size in relation to the size of your home, your budget and other such considerations.

No matter which dog breed you may choose, you must keep in mind that having a dog in the house is nothing less than an added responsibility in the house. So, you must always take care of your dog as a small child.
