The breed originated in Mexico In a region called Chihuahua, hence the name. Though they are a very common breed, they are not meant for everyone.

Chihuahua is the oldest American breed that has its origins in miniaturized dog breeds introduced by the Chinese.  The breed is available in two varieties, which are the long haired and smooth coated varieties. They are available in different color combinations of brown, fawn, and tan and black. However the chocolate colored variety is the most preferred amongst dog lovers.

Their weight is between two pounds to six pounds. They are only 6-9 inches in height. Their life span is 15 years and they usually live to that age if taken care of properly. They are very delicate and fragile to handle. If you have small kids in your home, you need to be more careful with these dogs as the tendency is to bite at the slightest provocation.

Chihuahuas love their owners and they are very affectionate. They will lick their owner's face and show their affection. This is an innate trait in the dog behavior of this type of breed. Courageous, strong-willed and fearless are some adjectives that can be used to describe the traits of dogs of this breed.

Chihuahua's dog grooming is not difficult if you have a small haired Chihuahua. Smooth coated  Chihuahuas need brushing only once a week. However if you have a long haired Chihuahua, then you should brush its coat at least twice a week.

Chihuahuas need special care and attention so that remain in good health. The dogs have are prone to certain diseases and adverse health conditions. In order to train dogs of this breed, you have to put in a lot of effort, especially when it comes to potty training.

With adequate training, they can be really adorable and caring companions for both adults and elderly people.
