When we think about small breed of dogs, the first breed that comes to mind is the Chihuahua. This is one of the most famous and sought after of toy dog breeds. The breed is native to Mexico and originated in a region called Chihuahua.

This is the smallest breed of dog in the world. They were introduced by Chinese and are among one of the oldest of American breeds.

Dog lovers often love to have small puppies as their pet. Their size makes these dogs an excellent accessory dog. These dogs may be small in size, but they are not inexpensive. These are very expensive pet dogs. The smaller the puppies are in size, the more expensive they are.

These puppies are available in two varieties. These varieties are the longhaired and the shorthaired Chihuahua. They are available in different colors of which the most common are fawn, tan, chocolate and black. Most people prefer the chocolate color. The adult Chihuahua weighs between two to six pounds. If looked after properly, these dogs can live up to 15 years of age.

Keep a Chihuahua away from small children as children may hurt the dog. These animals are fragile and need to be looked after properly. Their bodies are delicate and they can be easily hurt. Although small in size and fragile in nature, they are big on courage. They can stand up to bigger dogs.

These dogs are very fond of their owners and are loyal and affectionate. Although grooming is not too much of a problem with the small haired Chihuahua, the longhaired variety needs to be brushed everyday. As is the case with most small breeds, this dog takes its time to be housebroken.

In spite of certain problems, keeping a Chihuahua as a pet is a very rewarding experience.
