Beagle
The beagle is a medium sized dog and has its roots in the hound family. The dog is often compared to the Foxhound but is smaller in size and has shorter legs and longer ears. Because of their distinctive abilities of smelling, they are used for tracking purposes.

This dog is the perfect pet to have home if you have children around. Friendly and affable, the beagle gets along with kids. And since the dog rarely exhibits aggression, it makes for an excellent companion for children. Beagle is adaptable to most environments and lifestyles and thus makes for a perfect pet for everyone.

Appearance
The beagle is a medium sized dog with a broad head and a short muzzle. The ideal height of this dog varies from 13 to 16 inches. On an average, the beagle weighs anywhere between 8 to 16 kg.

The coat of this dog breed is a hound kind of coat. Since the coat is of medium length, grooming the dog is fairly easier. Large, hazel or brown colored eyes are another very peculiar trait of this dog breed. Beagle also has long ears that turn slightly towards the cheek.

Temperament
The beagle has a well balanced disposition. This dog breed is neither timid nor aggressive. A completely adaptable breed, the Beagle gets along well easily with most people. Its adjustable nature makes it apt for most environments and lifestyles.

Initially these dogs can be quite standoffish to strangers. But pleasing the dog is not too difficult. This is why the beagle makes for a poor watch dog. While training this dog you need to be persistent in your approach because the beagles tends to lose focus easily and can easily be distracted by other things.

Health
Beagles are prone to a number of problems like epilepsy, hypothyrodism and several kinds of dwarfism. Another health condition associated with the beagle is funny puppy. Under this condition, the dog develops weak legs, a crooked back and is susceptible to illness. Beagles may also suffer from Chinese beagle syndrome where in the eyes are slanted and the toes are underdeveloped.

Training
The beagle is an intelligent and gentle breed. It is because of these traits of the dog, that training him becomes fairly easier. However, the beagle has a tendency to get distracted. The dog may pick up a sent and begin to follow it. To train the dog effectively, you need to be consistent in your approach. Be firm with the dog but don’t be harsh. Any harshness can have negative consequences.
