The Dog is truly Man’s best friend
The dog is a member of the canine family to which belong the wolf, jackal, fox and coyotes amongst other animals. Dogs have been domesticated over the ages. They have evolved into a number of breeds and have proven to be a loyal friend and companion in many cultures and races.

The relationship between man and dog is perhaps as old as civilization itself.  Man and dog complement each other’s existence in a perfect manner. Dogs have been used by men in a number of roles. They have guarded men’s homes, helped men to hunt and track down vermin and herded their sheep and cattle or quite simply sat by their sides and given them silent companionship.

Dogs have carried out these tasks in a selfless manner. They have stayed alongside through thick and thin during their master’s lives and in some cases, even afterwards. In return, they have asked for very little. A shelter, food and a pat on the pack every now and then is all that dogs have asked for in return.

This relationship has endured even in today’s world. Dogs are in use in the police and military throughout the world. They assist in solving crimes, sniffing out contraband and help to detect the presence of explosives.  A number of breeds such as the Labrador retriever are specifically trained to act as guide dogs for the blind or incapacitated.

Of course, the relationship between man and beast has evolved into an entirely new dimension and dogs are sometimes treated like children and spoilt silly. Dogs have their own hotels and spas. A new range of blue blood designer dog breeds is small and exclusive enough to find their way into the handbags of celebrities.

All said and done, the simple pleasure of having a dog as a true friend is something that only a dog lover can appreciate.
