| Puppy Care: Introducing Puppy to an Older Dog |
|
Taking care of a single pet is not a very easy job. There are many things that you have to look after. Food, grooming, vaccinations, exercise, socialization and training are all very important aspects of bringing up a dog. If you are a typical dog lover, you will not treat these aspects as bothersome and will carry them out with zeal and dedication. As a typical dog lover, you may not be satisfied with just keeping one dog. You may feel that the joy and satisfaction of bringing up a single dog may be multiplied if another puppy is brought into the household. This may not always be true. It depends upon how you handle the situation. Remember that your pet dog is used to having a total monopoly of sorts on your time, love and affection. If you bring in another puppy, you will have to be very careful about how you handle the situation. It is after all a dog. You cannot expect it to handle the situation with maturity and dignity. Keep a close watch on your older dog and never leave it unattended with the younger pup. Spend quality time with each pet in such a way that both fee wanted and cared for. Take both of them out for walks and give them time. Feed the two dogs together and let them eat at the same time. Be patient and do not judge your older dog by a stray incidence of it letting out its frustration. Give them some time together and be tactful, kind and patient. If the two dogs belong to breeds that are tolerant of other canines, then chances are that over a period of time they will get to not only like each other but also become inseparable. |
