Do’s and Don’ts for Cooking Dog Food at Home
When it comes to feeding your dog, you can either serve him commercial dog food or prepare homemade food for him. However, as commercial dog food contains preservatives, homemade food is a more nutritious option. But before you serve home made food to your dog, know the basics of cooking food for you canine friend.

Balanced diet
The food that you serve to your pooch must consist of all the necessary ingredients to ensure his overall development. Vitamins, proteins and carbohydrates are the important ingredients that must not be missed in the food of your dog. They help to avoid diseases and toughen muscles of the pet. Both meat and vegetables are equally necessary to make his complete diet. Variation in meals would ensure that your pet enjoys his meal.

Food ingredients to avoid
When preparing dog food at home, it is important to note that salt should not be added to it. Also, ice cream, pastries, raw pork, onions, raisins, milk, white bread, grapes, junk food, fried food and fatty meats are some of the food items that must not be included in a pet’s diet.

It is also a common phenomenon to provide certain food items to our dog that we eat. For instance, children often eat chocolate and serve it to the pup as well. However, one must know that chocolate is harmful for your canine friend. The substance named obromine contained in chocolate is toxic for dogs.

Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are very harmful for dogs. Though you might not notice any harm with small quantity of chocolates but these smaller quantities accumulate to form large dangerous quantities. Increased urination, physical activity, diarrhea and vomiting are the symptoms that can be noticed later. This may increase to unusual heart rhymes and seizures.

Food ingredients to include
So, if you want to serve healthy food to your pooch, cooked or raw poultry, lamb, whitefish and fatty fish are good options available to you. Apart from this, eggs, chopped vegetables and cooked grains are some other food items that enhance the health of your pup. For healthy coat and skin, omega-3 rich oils can be included in the food. Not to forget, at least 30% of raw fat is essential for pets so as to ensure their healthy coat and skin. Needless to say, you must also make sure that when you serve food to your dog, it must not be extremely hot or cold. It must be served at the room temperature.

Amendment in diet
Furthermore, there are a few pets that are in the habit of having commercial food. So, it might be possible that such pets could not accustom themselves to homemade food initially. This can be recognized by pooch’s discomfort such as stomach upset and others after you have changed his diet from commercial to homemade food. Hence, it is advisable to make small and gradual amendments in the diet of your dog to avoid such discomforts.

So, these are a few things that must be kept in mind when you serve food to your dog. These things would bless your dog with good health and a life free from any illnesses, diseases and physical discomfort. Now, do not bother and prepare fresh food for healthy living of your pooch.
