Keeping a pet dog is a big responsibility. You have to be sure that you have the time and patience to look after your pet. You have to housebreak it, feed it on time, take it out to exercise and make sure that it is not left unattended or chained up for too long. Besides these, you have to look after the dog’s health. There are a number of dangerous and infectious diseases that a pet dog can suffer from. The first thing that you should do when you bring your puppy home is to get to know the vaccinations that the dog requires. Some of the diseases that are extremely dangerous and fatal are rabies, distemper and parvovirus. Follow your vet’s advice as to the required schedule for vaccinations and booster shots for these diseases and any other diseases that the vet suggests. De-worming and treating your pet dog for parasites such as fleas and ticks is also very important for the health of your pet. A pet with a parasitic infection such as fleas or ticks feels miserable and can do nothing but itch and scratch itself. Such infections especially if they are recurring in nature may indicate a low level of immunity and resistance. Build up your pet’s immunity by providing it the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients that it requires. There can be specific requirements according to the breed and the age of the dog. Follow your vet’s advice on the matter. There is one more thing that may vary according to the breed of your dog. Some breeds may be inherently susceptible to certain diseases. These may be cancers of certain parts of the body or spinal problems that set in after a certain age. Take your pet to the vet for periodic checkups, as these diseases may be curable if detected at an early stage. A healthy pet is a happy pet. If your pet is happy, you are happy. Keeping your pet healthy is in the best interest of both you and your pet. |
