Causes of Dog Health Problems - Bloody Stool Issues
Dogs have a number of health problems. Dogs can fall ill and suffer from a number of various infections. They can suffer from a number of gastrointestinal infections. One of the most common of gastrointestinal problems associated with dogs is melena.

It is a very painful and distressing situation. The basic characteristic of this health problem is that the dog passes stools that contain thick black blood. The problems with internal bleeding that begin in the stomach or duodenum. The blood enters the gastrointestinal tract. It is then partly digested by the enzymes in the stomach and lower intestinal tract.

The dark color of the blood is caused by oxidation of the iron content in the blood when it passes through the colon. It is a distressing situation that is usually caused by peptic ulcer or laceration of the stomach. It may result in anemia and although it is not the cause of immediate concern, it should be treated as soon as possible.

Another problem that is similar in nature is hematochezia. In this condition, the dog passes fresh stool in its blood. In case your dogs exhibits either of the symptom of fresh or digested blood in its stool, take it to the vet for a thorough physical examination. The vet carries out a series of tests that confirms the condition. Make sure that your dog is treated for the underlying conditions of melena or hematochezia.  

Usually the doctor prescribes medications that block the acids in the stomach and coat the intestines. The doctor will also suggest a diet to ease the pain and the symptoms. You should provide your dog with a calm and relaxed environment until it is back on its feet and recovers from this condition.
