As dog owners, we are concerned about the health and safety of our pets. We try to make sure that the dogs do not get into trouble or do not cause any trouble. One of the bad habits that a dog may pick up is jumping over the fence. You might face this problem, especially if your dog is a large breed and in its curiosity jumps over the fence.

You should check this behavior as it might turn into a habit.

A dog jumps over the fence for a number of reasons. It probably saw an animal on the other side and wanted to chase it. It could see another dog in the neighbor’s yard and might want to play with it. Probably it got bored, had nothing to do, and was finding a way to amuse itself.

Monitor the dog’s behavior when it is in the yard. If possible, keep it on a long leash for as long as it is in yard. Of course, that may not always be possible or desirable.  If you find that it has jumped over the fence, bring it back and scold it. Do not be too harsh, as the dog does not know that jumping over the fence is wrong. Use the command stay when you have brought it back. Be firm with the dog but make sure that you do not break its spirit.

If you feel that the dog was lonely and jumped over the fence because it wanted someone or something to play with, then you should probably spend more time with your pet dog. If you find that it is becoming habitual of jumping over the fence, it would be a good idea not to leave it unattended when it is playing in the yard.
