Talk about behavioral problems with dogs and most pet owners will complain about nipping. But, is dog nipping actually a problem? Well, not really! Instead, it is more of way to learn and communicate for your pet. Here is all that you need to know about dog nipping and understand why it is important for your pet.

A way of learning
While many pet owners consider nipping to be a behavioral problem, it is nothing but just a way of communication for your pet. Your pup does not have hands to explore things around them. This is why they nip to touch, feel and understand objects around them. Thus, nipping proves to be more of a learning tool for your pet more than anything else.

Further on, nipping also helps pets learn bite inhibition. Puppies nip not just the things around them but also their mother and other littermates. When the pup nips his mother/littermates too hard, they respond with a yelp. The mother's yelp is even accompanied with a warning/correction. This helps the pup know his limits.

Different from biting
Many pet owners confuse nipping with biting. However, the two of them are extremely different. While biting is a form of aggression, nipping is a form of communication or interaction or communication for dogs. While biting may indicate underlying behavioral problems, this does not hold true for nipping.

Dealing with nipping
Even though nipping is a way of growing up for puppies, it can become a slight problem for the pet owners. When trying to deal with nipping, it is important that pet owners be a little patient.

To deal with nipping, you can give a loud shriek every time your dog nips at you. Make sure that you create an unpleasant noise as soon as your pup's teeth intentionally touch your body. Do not wait for your dog to nip too hard. Remember that you will not be able to impart any kind of successful training to your dog if you give him too much discretion. You will have to tell your dog to NEVER nip, instead of being okay with it sometimes.

The concept of social isolation also works well in dealing with dog nipping. Does your dog nip at you while playing? If yes, then stop playing with him right away. If your dog is nipping in his litter, other puppies will not play with him. Slowly and steadily, your dog will come to realize that nipping makes him lonely. This social isolation will work to your advantage and you will be able to teach your dog to not nip successfully.

Being a little consistent with your pet is all that you need.
