Do not run
This is something that you MUST adhere to if you are encountered with a familiar dog. Even if the dog seems way too threatening, running will only make him chase you. And needless to mention, the dog will chase you and you are likely to be bitten. Instead, you should stand firm on your ground and walk slowly even if the dog is growling at you.

Watch out when trying to end a fight between two dogs
If your dog has got in a brawl with another dog, be careful when you are trying to separate them. Do not try to hold the dog by his face or his collar when trying to spate them. Always use his hind legs to pull him apart. However, if the fight seems serious, try not to touch them at all. In such extreme situations, you could use a pepper spray or a hose to set them apart.

Let the dog sniff

Curiosity is a default trait amidst dogs. Whenever you approach a dog, he is likely to sniff you or be around you for a while to investigate you. Touch a dog only when he is done with his investigation part else he could end up biting you in self defense.

Never wake up a sleeping dog
Waking up a sleeping dog and that too roughly could serve you with a nice dog bite. Dogs are angered when they are waken up from their sleep and may end up biting you. This is even more important if the dog is not yours.
