But the feel good factor translates into the feel bad factor in a moment’s time when your dog begins to bark excessively. Dog barking could be for various reasons. At times a dog may bark to alert you if he has something out of the ordinary, or he may just bark to grab you attention. In case your dog is barking for protection or to alert you, there is nothing that you need to do. But in case your dog is barking simply out of boredom or to seek your attention, there are few things you can do. Ignore Dogs are a pampered lot. They are used to being the apple of everyone’s eye. More than often dogs bark simply they are not getting the attention they are used to. Giving them the attention they are demanding could result in a constant barking behavior. In such situations, it is best that you ignore your dog. Repeat this once or twice and he shall no that this is no way to command attention. Distraction is the key There might be times when your dog begins to bark and refuses to stay quiet. In such cases distracting your dog could be the best thing to do. Arrange for something mysterious and different happen in the house. This will make your dog curious. All his barking would stop instantly as his attention would be diverted to the unidentified factor. Reach out for his favorite treat Now this one is quite an irresistible option for your dog. Simply reach out for your dog’s favorite food and wave it in front of his nose. Your dog will instantly quiet down, as he would now be concentrating on the smell of the treat. But don’t give in so easily. Let your dog be quote for a few minutes before you actually hand over the treat. This way your dog shall understand he shall be rewarded for being silent and not bark unnecessarily. Watch your actions Believe it or not, your dog does not understand a word you say. It is your actions that make him understand what is expected out of him. It becomes very important for a pet owner to watch out his actions so that he is not getting the wrong message across. Every time your dog barks instruct him to be ‘quiet’ with a stern finger. Patting him unnecessarily will further aggravate the problem. |
