Dogs like all living creatures are subject to health problems. These animals can be infected by various types of diseases or health problems on account of a number of reasons. One health problem that dogs may experience is allergies. A dog can be allergic to various allergens in its environment. These allergens may be present in household chemicals, dust or the food that the dog eats.

Allergic reactions may be in the form of minor yet very bothersome symptoms such as itching, skin infection or sneezing or other major symptoms such as vomiting of bile or blood and diarrhea.  Let us face the facts that dogs are not used to eating certain types of foods. Commercial dog foods have all types of ingredients, fillers, colors and artificial flavoring. Dogs may not be used to these ingredients and may develop allergies as a natural response.

Another reason is that many people out of a mistaken sense of love and affection tend to feed their pet dogs, table scraps. Table scraps are human foods. These might contain allergens such as onion or chocolate, substances that are known to cause toxicity in dogs. Dogs are dogs and not humans. Their digestive and immune systems do not respond to various foods the same way that our systems react.

In order to make sure that your dog is suffering from a food allergy, it is essential to take your pet to the vet for a thorough examination. The vet will be able to rule out allergies on account of other reasons such as parasites, dust, mites or household chemicals.

If feed allergy is suspected then the vet may recommend that you feed your dog commercial dog food of another brand. The vet may place your dog on a special diet that consists of foods that are not known to cause allergies. The vet may also test your pet dog’ response to various allergens by conducting sensitivity tests so that the particular agent or substance that causes allergies can be identified and isolated.
