Many dog owners do not like to feed their dogs on commercial diets. If you are also one of them then you could very well opt for a BARF diet for your dog. BARF diet stands for Bones and Raw Food diet. However, putting your dog on a barf diet may not be as simple as it may seem to be. There are certain things that you need to take care of to help your dog get used to this diet and adapt to it without any problem.

Here are a few easy steps that would help you feed your dog on a BARF diet quite easily:

Consultation with your veterinarian is must before you start with it
Your vet is the man who known what is best for your dog. Therefore, consult your vet before you out your dog on the BARF diet. He would be able to introduce it gradually in to your dog's daily routine without actually scaring your dog. If he is not in the favor of BARF diet then try to find out the reasons for it. Also, carrying out a little research before you go to your vet is very helpful. It would help you consult with your vet in a much more informed way.

Where would the meat come from?
Your dog is most likely to eat the parts of meat that may be waste for you. Therefore, you do not necessarily need to buy expensive meat from supermarket. You could approach a butcher and fix up a discounted deal wherein he may sell you the waste meat parts like fish heads, chicken necks and chicken carcasses etc at much lower rates. This way you would end up saving a lot of money.

Beware of the bacteria!
One thing that you need to be very careful about while offering BARF diet to your dog is the bacteria. Raw food is sure to have some amount of bacteria in it like, E, coli and Salmonella. Not only this much, bacteria has all chances of existence in the various parts of your home as well.

Your pooch would be able to manage the natural amount of bacteria but anything above that could lead to a big problem. To avoid falling in to any such soup, wash your hands before and after. While cutting the meat in to pieces, make sure that the surface and the cutter are both bacteria free.

Proper chewing is very important
Proper chewing is usually not a requirement in case of most of the commercial dog foods. They hardly require your dog to chew the food properly. If you have bneen feeding your dog on commercial food only then he is likely to have the same habit. But this habit could be dangerous if he just inhales the bones as it is without chewing them properly. To avoid this situation, monitor your dog initially and feed him one piece at a time.
