Consumption of chocolates by dogs is an issue for all dog keepers. Dog lovers tend to offer entire box of chocolates to their pet dog without  the knowledge of adverse effects that it could have on their puppies. The puppy may end up developing a host of complications due to excessive eating of chocolate.

Chocolate in any form is considered to be toxic for your pet dog. Of course, the degree of toxicity depends a lot on the size of your pet and the amount of chocolate that the pet has consumed. The important thing to remember is that a dog’s metabolism is not built to handle chocolate.

One of the chemical substances found in chocolate in any form is theobromine. This amount of this substance differs from one form of chocolate to another. Milk chocolate may contain very little amounts of this substance whereas cocoa or baker’s chocolate may contain very high amounts.
This substance can be toxic to dogs if consumed in a high quantity.

In case you have to reward your puppy or adult dog, then choclate is not the treat that you should be giving to your dog. Select doggy biscuits or treats that are specifically made for dogs.

In your house, issue a strict warning to your kids. Make sure that they do not feed chocolate in any form to pet dog or pups. You should also make sure that you keep chocolate out of reach of dogs as there are a number of places that a dog can climb on to such as a kitchen counter top to grab a piece of chocolate.

In case your dog, in spite of all of your precautions has eaten chocolate, then the first thing to do (as in the case of any food poisoning) is to induce vomiting by using an emetic. This should be done in the first two hours of the dog having eaten chocolate. If two hours have passed, then seek the opinion of a vet and take suitable action.

The best option is to prevent your dog from having chocolate in any form whatsoever. It will leave more for you to eat.
