As a dog lover, you go through a lot of trouble looming after your pet. You feed it properly and take it out for exercise. In spite of your best efforts, your dog may catch an infection. After all, dogs will be dogs and will explore areas they should not and will dig holes into the ground. One of the most distressing infections that your pet dog may become a victim of is ringworm.

Let us first take a look at what ringworm exactly is. It is a skin infection caused by fungi and not an intestinal worm infection. It is a very common infection and if your dog becomes infected, there is no reason to be distraught or to panic. Although ringworm is a distressing experience for the pet, it can be cured. Take your pet to the vet if you suspect that it is infected with ringworm

The vet will carry out a diagnosis using ultraviolet light or scrape of some of the skin from the infected area. If ringworm is confirmed, then the vet may prescribe topical creams, shampoos and oral medicines. Treating your pet with the prescribed medication will cure the problem, even though it may take some time.

Remember to wear a pair of gloves when you apply a topical ointment or wash your dog with a shampoo. Ringworm is infectious and can be easily passed on from dog to owner. Both patience and precaution are required to treat this disease.

As a matter of precaution, make sure that your dog does not go outside on its own and does not dig holes in the yard. Make sure that it is getting sufficient nutrition, as this will help to build up its immunity and enable it to fight infections.
