Anemia in dogs can be caused by a number of reasons. One of the reasons is improper nutrition or more specifically a lack of iron in the diet. This is just one reason. In the case of pet dogs, some animals may suffer from anemia, in spite of having sufficient iron in their diets. Blood loss due to parasitic infestations caused by fleas, ticks or hookworms may reach such a stage, that the animal may become anemic.
Anemia in pet dogs is a serious condition and the dog should be given proper treatment in the form of dietary supplements and a diet rich in iron and vitamin B12 along with medication, depending on the seriousness and nature of the condition. In extreme cases, a pet dog may require blood transfusion to treat Anemia.
If your dog is diagnosed with Anemia, then you should provide it with sufficient rest and diet. Regular follow up visits to the vet are important to make sure that the dog has been cured of this health problem.
