Signs and symptoms such as disorientation, seizure, lethargy, lack of appetite, diarrhea, or vomiting should alert you to illness in your dog. The illness symptoms can include bloody urine, straining to urinate, fits of coughing, bloody stools or watery ones, weight loss, or breathing difficulties.
Inability to walk and tendency of lying down for extended periods of time are other indicators of your dog not being well. He may have a fracture or a sprain in one of his legs.
You can know that your dog is ill also by observing if his eyes are cloudy or bloodshot or he appears to have a squint in the eyes. You can be sure something is wrong with his eyes if you find him pawing at them or if you observe discharge oozing from them.
Similarly, if you notice discharge from his ears, you can know that your dog is ill. Other symptoms of ear-related illness in your dog include inflamed and red ears, pawing at the ears, and odor from the ears or swelling in them. You can hear your dog whine if there is tenderness in his ears.
A pet dog’s nose-related illness symptoms can include congestion, coughing, or sneezing. A bleeding nose or nasal discharge in your dog is a sure sign of illness in him. Oral symptoms of illness in your dog include swelling on his lips or tongue. They also include bleeding per mouth.
You can notice dental issues in your dog when you notice change in the color of his gums. Your dog may become restless and an examination of the internals of his mouth may reveal a foreign object such as a stick or a bone stuck in the gap between the teeth or near the roof of the mouth.
A dog foaming at the mouth or drooling excessively is also a sign of illness in him or even if he cannot swallow food without pain. You can even guess that your dog is ill if you find that opening or closing his mouth causes him pain.
Respiratory signs of illness in your dog include breathing difficulties, excessive panting, or recent coughing. You can also know from your pet dog’s heartbeat if he is ill by placing a hand on the left side of his chest.
