Dogs are lovable creatures and have been man’s loyal companion since ages. One of the common problems that afflict dogs is worms. Puppies are more susceptible to worms than grown up dogs. There are different types of worms that can infect puppies. These infestations can result various side effects.

Worms can make puppies and dogs sick. Some of the common problems that puppies and dogs will experience if they are infested with worms are loss of appetite, weakness, fatigue, anemia, retarded growth and in severe cases lung and breathing problems. Dogs that have worms may have a thin and lusterless coat because of this problem.

Dogs tend to pass large amounts of worm larvae and eggs through their feces and this result in further infestation. Some of the worms that can infect dogs are tapeworms, roundworms, ringworms, hookworms and whipworms.

Tapeworms when excreted through the feces look like grains of rice. In case you suspect that your pet has tapeworms, you should take a sample to the vet for a stool examination. Remember that tapeworms can infect humans. Children are especially susceptible to tapeworm infestation. If you have a dog and you suspect that it has tapeworm, you have to cure the dog of the problem for your children’s and your dog’s sake.

Taking timely action in the case of puppies when they are young helps prevent them from becoming infested with worm infections. The first thing you should do when you bring your pup home is to take it to the vet. As a part of regular prevention, vets prescribe de-worming treatment for dogs.  These medicines are available at pet stores and drug stores. Following the prescribed de-worming schedule will save your pet from worms. A pet dog that has worms is neither a happy nor a healthy pet.
